The Space Between Seconds — Claudke Beamsley

A Collection of Six Short Stories

In a quiet neighborhood, ordinary objects begin to hold more than they should. Elena finds a box of glass vials in her grandmother’s kitchen, each filled with clear liquid and labeled with dates: the morning Tom proposed, Sarah’s first laugh, snow on Christmas Eve. When she opens one, she is no longer in the present. Across the same streets, a cartographer notices a house on an old map that no longer exists on the ground, a sound engineer records piano music that has not been played for decades, and the layers of a place begin to press against one another. The six stories follow the people who learn to listen to what the neighborhood has been trying to keep.

Excerpt

Elena discovered the box on a Tuesday morning when the autumn light fell through her grandmother’s kitchen window at exactly the angle that made dust motes look like falling stars. Her grandmother had been gone three months, and Elena was finally brave enough to sort through the accumulated archaeology of ninety-three years.

The box was unremarkable—cardboard, shoe-sized, held together with yellowed tape that crackled when she peeled it back. Inside, wrapped in tissue paper soft as moth wings, were dozens of small glass vials. Each no bigger than her thumb, each filled with what looked like water, each labeled in her grandmother’s spidery handwriting with dates and brief descriptions:

“June 12, 1967 – The morning Tom proposed”
“September 3, 1971 – Sarah’s first laugh”
“December 24, 1983 – Snow falling on Christmas Eve”
