The library at Saint-Ursula burned on a Tuesday. Not all at once—libraries rarely do. It began in the Index of Forbidden Geographies, a section so obscure the librarian himself had to consult the card catalog to remember where it lived. By the time the smoke found him, the fire already had the advantage. He saved three books. The town did not mourn. It simply forgot, the way a place forgets a childhood face once the edges have gone soft. Above the apothecary, with the scent of lavender still masking the smoke in his clothes, he waited. On the seventh day the apothecary’s daughter knocked. Her name was Elara. She asked where the books had gone. He did not know how to answer, only that some of them were still here, if one knew where to look. She held out her hand. He took it.

The library at Saint-Ursula burned on a Tuesday.
Not all at once, of course—libraries don’t burn like that. They smolder, first in the forgotten corners where the air is thick with dust and the spines of books have grown brittle with age. The fire began in the Index of Forbidden Geographies, a section so obscure even the librarian (who was, at the time, me) had to consult the card catalog to remember where it lived.
