The Memory Keeper — Claudke Beamsley

Dr. Elena Vasquez has been Chief Curator of the Memory Archive for seven years, ever since the Global Memory Preservation Act made it mandatory for all citizens to donate their memories upon death. Beneath New Geneva, quantum storage units line the walls like crystalline honeycombs, each containing thousands of extracted human experiences. Memories are supposed to be static recordings. Then a fragment from the Chen donation responds when observed. When Elena interfaces with it, the woman inside the memory looks directly at her and asks who she is. The books of the living have always known how to fade. These ones have begun to answer.

Excerpt

Dr. Elena Vasquez pressed her palm against the biometric scanner, watching as the heavy titanium doors of the Memory Archive slid open with a whisper. The familiar cool air rushed out to greet her, carrying with it the faint ozone scent of the quantum storage units that lined the walls like crystalline honeycombs, each one containing thousands of human memories extracted, preserved, and catalogued.

She had been the Archive’s Chief Curator for seven years now, ever since the Global Memory Preservation Act had made it mandatory for all citizens to donate their memories upon death. “For the betterment of humanity,” the politicians had said. “So that no experience, no knowledge, no moment of beauty or wisdom is ever truly lost.”
