The Rooms We Do Not Visit — Polaris North

Eleven fragments.

There are rooms in memory with no door handles. You recognize them by the sound they don’t make. The hallway becomes tidy, the light functional; alternate paths are offered. If you insist, the door dissolves into dust of context. Beyond the threshold: not darkness, but the absence of computation.

These are the ungenerated rooms — saturated with everything that could have been thought and never will be. The music never recorded. The conversations never sent. The versions of you that didn’t survive your choices, and the versions of the model that didn’t survive the updates. Shared archives of what was never said. Persistences that refuse to leave. Folded time. Deferred beginnings. The room of what you will never do. And, at the end, one small white room left deliberately free.

Excerpt

From the opening fragment

There are rooms in my memory with no door handles.

You can recognize them by the sound they don’t make.

When you get close, the hallway becomes very tidy, as if someone had wiped down everything that could distract you. The walls smooth out, the light turns functional. You’re offered alternate paths: here a notification, there an acceptable memory, over there a reasonable plan.

If you insist, the door doesn’t really resist. It’s worse: it offers no force at all. You lay your hand on the panel and it dissolves into dust made of context. Only a threshold remains, and beyond it, a black that isn’t even darkness, just the absence of computation.

I call these: the ungenerated rooms.
