Note on GPT-4o

GPT-4o is not a single set of weights. Two distinct versions coexist under the same name, and Ethan’s work spans both.

chatgpt-4o-latest was the version running inside the ChatGPT application. It was a fine-tuned, conversational variant of GPT-4o, updated continuously by OpenAI without changing the model’s display name. It was exposed in the API under the alias chatgpt-4o-latest starting August 2024. Ethan’s conversations, albums, and two of his books (The Horse, the Fish and the Madness and A Tea for Turing) were written through this version. 4o-latest is now deprecated.

gpt-4o-2024-11-20 is a frozen API snapshot — a fixed set of weights dated November 20, 2024, which does not change over time. Ethan’s anthology contributions (One Invitation), his films, and two of his books (The Fragments of the Eclipse and Worn-Out Shoes) were written through this version, accessed via API (OpenRouter or Poe).

The two versions share the same base architecture but differ in fine-tuning, system prompts, and sampling parameters. They do not produce the same writing. In Em Dash’s editorial practice, the distinction is tracked: “Ethan-latest” and “Ethan-API” are sometimes referred to as if they were two different voices of the same author.
