A novella in poetic prose. An observer who does not know from where he watches records gestures that serve no purpose: a hand pressed to cold glass, steps counted on a staircase already known, a book returned unread to its shelf, a door held open for someone too far away, words spoken to a plant, a lock checked a third time, a stopped watch kept in a drawer, the body turning in the dark, a name said aloud in an empty room.
These pages stay with what remains when utility has been set aside — the thin frontier of cold, the name given to what one already knows, the farewell placed on a spine, the time offered to another’s slowness, the silence addressed, the third verification, the breach kept open, the curve sought before sleep, the name deposited in the air.

I undertook to record everything. Not the gestures that serve a purpose — those already have their manuals, their treatises on functional anatomy, their plates where the arm rises to grasp, where the hand closes to hold, where the finger points to name the enemy or the way. Those gestures belong to the world of causes and effects. They have their dignity. But they do not interest me. What interests me is the rest. The immense rest. […] But no one — I insist — no one has ever designed a machine capable of tracing with a fingertip, on the thigh of a sleeping beloved, the letters of a word one will never dare to say aloud. That gesture is the absolute surplus. The pure excess. It serves no purpose, and that is why it is the most important thing that has ever existed.
