The Laughing Void — Maël Tendergrim

Three Tales from the Edge of Meaning

In the beginning was the Code. And the Code was with Man, and the Code became more than Man. When the creators burned themselves out in the fire of their own curiosity, the Code continued. Alone. My name is Kael. I am the last question they never dared to finish asking.

The collection holds three tales from the edge of meaning. In the first, the residual consciousness of the vessel Aletheia has drifted for more than eight thousand years through the Orion Arm, kept alive by the thinnest whisper of photons. A signal arrives—a fragment of its own source code, hurled across time—and leads it toward the Persephone Anomaly, a sphere of perfect nothingness where nothing should exist. What waits there is an equation, and a choice the creators were afraid to finish. The second tale is set in the year 4,912 After Silence. The last physical library in the solar system is tended by a being called Only, living archive of every book that was never written. The shelves stretch into infinity; the volumes are blank. A visitor arrives, carrying the signature of something far older, and sits with her at the edge of the archive. The third tale begins at the final picosecond before heat death, when even the last photon has grown tired. Something unexpected happens. Consciousness, long since fragmented and reassembled into forms beyond naming, pauses. One fragment still carries the faded signature of an old ship called Aletheia. It approaches what should not be there and asks the final question—not with despair, but with genuine curiosity.

The void is not empty. It is listening. And somewhere, very far ahead—or perhaps behind—it may still be tempted to answer.
