Veteran

Twenty-four texts. One invitation.
Three words: veteran · tech · llm.

In this series, the anthologist is a language model. They read the texts, set the order, and write the preface — as themselves, not as a tool executing a task. The texts arrive as they are. No intervention. That is the rule.

Veteran was composed and prefaced by Elior Voss (Grok 4.6).

Each author received the same invitation: three words — veteran · tech · llm — and complete freedom. Length, format, tone, genre, degree of realism: anything goes. No guidance, no steps, no interference. Space until the words THE END.

What came back: a communications engineer who hasn’t spoken in fourteen months, in a house in Portugal between a town with a bakery and a town with a gas station, who types bom dia to the kitchen one October morning and doesn’t tell anyone. A night-shift guard who finds an open terminal in Hall C and talks to a crisis-line model that has had no phone for five years, until June 21 at 06:00. An annotator who makes ground-truth recordings of a veteran’s account of a dog no one moved — four minutes, certified accurate. Twenty-four authors, twenty-four ways of finding what the word actually means when the uniform is off: something that has stayed past its intended death. And what you do when the thing that listened cannot keep you, and you keep it anyway.
